Health experts warn of resurgence of youth e-cigarette use as kids head back to class 2022-08-20
With a new school year starting, health and education advocates are raising concern that youth e-cigarette use could be on the rise again. Youth e-cigarette use, also known as vaping, remains a serious public health problem in the United States. According to the latest government survey, over 2 million middle and high school students used e-cigarettes in the first half of 2021, even as many schools remained closed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. As kids have returned to in-person learning, some educators have reported seeing a resurgence in youth e-cigarette use. "Kids all think it`s cool when they start but a very high percentage of kids, once they become hooked, don`t think it`s cool at all. They become desperate to quit and have a lot of trouble quitting. The best way to avoid the struggle of quitting is not to start at all," said Matt Myers, President of the Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids Myers said the Food and Drug Administration has missed deadlines set by Congress and the courts to make decisions about what e-cigarette products can stay on the market. In June, the FDA ordered all Juul products off the market, but then backtracked in the face of a lawsuit by Juul. As a result of these delays, e-cigarettes remain for sale in a wide assortment of kid-friendly flavors, such as banana ice, peach soda and menthol.
Vape starter kits on the NHS could help smokers quit 2022-08-20
Giving out vape starter kit vouchers on the NHS could help even hardened smokers quit, according to a new study from the University of East Anglia. Researchers worked with GPs and the NHS stop smoking service, which is commissioned locally by Public Health at Norfolk County Council, to set up a pilot vape shop voucher scheme to help patients who had tried and failed to quit smoking in the past. An evaluation of the scheme, funded by Norfolk County Council, showed it was a big success – with 42% of the entrenched smokers who were referred to it and redeemed their vape voucher having quit within a month. Due to the success of the pilot, the scheme has been rolled out across Norfolk and the research team hope it could be rolled out nationally to help more smokers quit. Lead researcher and addiction expert Prof Caitlin Notley, from UEA`s Norwich Medical School, said: "Research shows that vaping is an effective way of quitting smoking, compared to nicotine replacement therapies like patches and gum. E-cigarettes or vapes are now the most popular way of stopping smoking. "Our research has previously shown that they may be particularly helpful in helping people to not only quit, but to stay quit for good.
he hype about trendy disposable e-cigarettes reaches Switzerland 2022-08-15
Blick reader Valeria K.* (25) was an occasional smoker and often smoked a traditional cigarette on weekends-until her younger sister, 21, introduced her to a new type of disposable e-cigarette. "My hands, my clothes, and my hair don`t smell like smoke," said Valeria K. says, explaining her switch. He is a symbol of many. Newer types of disposable e-cigarettes are particularly popular with young people. No tobacco is burned with e-cigarettes compared to traditional cigarettes. Instead, a liquid is heated – the resulting vapor is inhaled by the smokers. Most electronic fogs still contain nicotine. The likelihood of addiction is correspondingly high. E-cigarettes are nothing new. But until recently, vapers had to make do with a clunky device. In recent years, however, countless new products have hit the market and are enjoying increasing popularity. Including handy disposable vapes. The Elfbar brand is especially popular among young people. E-cigarettes come in a variety of bright colors. According to Mario Pappo, 51, president of the Swiss Vape Trade Association, "sales of disposable e-cigarettes have been increasing by 30 percent each month since the beginning of the year. They now make up 30 percent of the e-cigarette market."
Australians overwhelmingly support action to protect young people from e-cigarettes 2022-08-15
A new report from Cancer Council Victorias Centre for Behavioural Research in Cancer (CBRC) shows the vast majority of Australians (83%) overwhelmingly support action to regulate and enforce e-cigarettes to prevent a new generation from becoming addicted to nicotine. The report uses data from the Social Research Centres probability-based panel, Life in Australia. Unlawful over-the-counter availability of e-cigarettes is threatening to undo decades of public health success in Australia, particularly among young adults, with a recent ANU report1 confirming most e-cigarette users are young people, who are both vaping and smoking. Most Australians seem to recognise this public health threat and want action to be taken now, warns Cancer Council Australia CEO, Professor Tanya Buchanan. The CBRC report, commissioned by Cancer Council Australia and Quit, also showed three-quarters (76%) of 1824-year-old Australians, the age group with the highest rate of e-cigarette use, and 70% of Australians overall, agree e-cigarettes are highly addictive. Professor Buchanan continued, noting the results show very high public support for Federal and state/territory governments to immediately intensify compliance and enforcement measures.
Trading standards issue warning to retailers over underage vape sales 2022-08-10
Officers from Gloucestershire County Council's trading standards department are disappointed in the number of shops found to have sold disposable e-cigarettes to underage buyers. Trading standards carried out test purchasing operations, supported by the police cadets, over three days at the start of August 2022, following an increase in reports of underage sales of e-cigarettes, known as vapes. Officers used intelligence gathered by concerned parents, schools and members of the public to visit retailers who it is alleged had sold items to children under 18. Volunteers, aged 15 and 16, visited 29 shops around Gloucestershire and were able to buy vapes from six of them in Gloucester, Cheltenham, Dursley, and Cirencester. Trading standards officers will now be revisiting the shops which sold the products to advise them of their responsibilities on age-related products. They will continue working with them to ensure they are fully aware of the law and their legal obligations, before undertaking further unannounced checks in the coming months.
The Third Edition of "Ride for Vape" 2022-08-10
A 700 km bike ride starting from Turin in Italy and ending in Strasbourg, aimed to educate about the benefits of vaping. Two professional cyclists held the long tour called "Ride for Vape" for the third time, with the aim of educating the public and politicians about the reduced risk of electronic cigarettes in comparison to combustible tobacco. Following the initial two purely Italian tours in 2020 and 2021, this year the tour was extended to other places in Europe. One of the riders, e-cigarette entrepreneur Umberto Roccatti shares how his life changed thanks to switching to vaping. "Before I switched to e-cigarettes, I smoked up to 30 cigarettes a day for 15 years. With this tour, we want to concretely show that by switching to vaping, someone like me can normalize their health, change their lifestyle and successfully exercise," he said. Roccatti is also the president of Italy`s e-cigarette association ANAFE and vice-president of Europe`s Independent European Vape Alliance (IEVA), and highlights the need for the WHO to rethink its outdated smoking cessation strategy. "WHO needs to rethink and recognize the potential of e-cigarettes to reduce global smoking rates. Especially in poorer countries we register particularly high smoking rates. Ignoring e-cigarettes means leaving people to their own devices", he explained.
Cash for vapes incentive canned for now 2022-08-08
Health professionals' critical outlook on a "cash for vapes" program from Big Tobacco has seen the program halted for the time being. The program would have seen pharmacies across the country receive $275 when ordering their VEEV vapes along with other cash incentives for referral programs to items made by Philip Morris tobacco company. Brimbank council conducts inspections of retailers who sell tobacco and e-cigarette products, however the regulation of products containing nicotine is outside of council jurisdiction to regulate and is regulated by the state department of health. Council has particular concern in young people vaping following a survey by Resilient Youth Australia of youths in brimbank, finding that 5% of year 7 students and one fifth of year 12 students surveyed had used an e-cigarette. Brimbank Mayor Cr Jasmine Nguyen said the increase in Brimbank youth partaking in vaping is alarming, "There needs to be a much
Whitley Bay corner shop caught selling booze and vapes to children in Trading Standards sting 2022-08-08
A North Tyneside convenience store has been caught selling alcohol and vapes to children. Supersave Food and Wine on Eastbourne Gardens in Whitley Bay faces having its alcohol licence revoked after North Tyneside Trading Standards caught it selling booze and e-cigarettes to youngsters. A North Tyneside Council Trading Standards report details how they had received a number of complaints that the store was selling restricted goods to underage children and enlisted young volunteers to carry out "test purchases" of alcohol and vapes to see if staff would refuse to sell to them. A 16-year-old volunteer was sold an e-cigarette during a test purchase in February 2022 leading to the owner and licensee receiving a warning letter from Trading Standards. Another test purchase was carried out in May when a 16-year-old was sold a four-pack of Budweiser without being challenged about their age. The sales assistant was fined £90 for the offence. Trading Standards said it was concerned about the two underage sales in a matter of weeks and have applied to North Tyneside Council to review the premises licence. In the report, North Tyneside Trading Standards said: "

The CDPHE states that the data may indicate that students are understanding the dangers of smoking and vaping more. "The latest data is encouraging,"said Natalya Versheure, Tobacco Program Manager at CDPHE. "But there`s still more work to do. We recommend that parents, schools, and communities continue to encourage youth to make healthy choices and reinforce tobacco-free habits." However, some of the data indicated that tobacco usage in some areas is increasing or remaining static. The usage of flavored vape products has increased from 18 percent to 23 percent. The percentage of students who use menthol cigarettes has remained steady. The data also suggest that children are experimenting with vaping tobacc
KJ: Control of Tobacco Product and Smoking Bill to also regulate e-cig, vape 2022-08-02
KUALA LUMPUR: All importers and manufacturers of tobacco products, tobacco substances or substitute products to be sold in the Malaysian market are required to register their products under the proposed Control of Tobacco and Smoking Bill. Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said Clauses 3, 4, 5 and 6 of the proposed law covered provisions on the requirements to register the abovementioned products. "The provisions are important and critical to allow all tobacco products, substances or tobacco substitute products to have their specifications and contents recorded. "The registration of the products would make the enforcement process easier, including helping to identify unregistered tobacco products, substances or tobacco substitute products," he said in his speech in tabling the bill for second reading today. Vape or e-cigarette sellers, who have been running their businesses illegally, would be able to register their products, he said. Clauses
BACK TO SCHOOL: Using e-cigarettes at school can get you disciplined 2022-08-02
In the past several months, great steps have been made to lessen the impact that e-cigarettes have on middle and high schools nationwide. However, this in no way means the tobacco industry has been contained. In fact, the CDC estimates that in 2020, 19.6% of high school students (3.02 million) and 4.7% of middle school students (550,000) reported current e-cigarette use in the United States. This is an issue that has persisted for too long. According to the Surgeon General, nicotine use during the teen years poses threats to students` developing brains, impacting learning, memory, and attention spans as well as increasing the risk for future addiction to other drugs. Even scarier, e-cigs can be altered to contain other substances, including marijuana and other dangerous and illegal drugs. As with nicotine, e-cigs can contain much purer, more potent doses of the active ingredient (THC) in marijuana than a typical marijuana cigarette. A student purchasing an e-cig, or sharing an e-cig with a friend, may have no way of knowing that the device is laced with potentially dangerous drugs. Rio Rancho Public Schools does not take the use of e-cigarettes lightly. The Discipline Matrix will be followed for students who are in possession of or using e-cigs, including 1 to 10 days of out-of-school suspension depending on the level of infraction and number of offenses.
Altria's $13B investment in Juul e-cigarettes vaporizes 2022-07-29
WASHINGTON (AP) - Cigarette maker Altria's $13 billion investment in the troubled vaping company Juul has gone up in smoke - now worth less than 5% of its original value as U.S. regulators move to ban its e-cigarettes. Altria slashed the value of its Juul investment by more than $1.2 billion Thursday, pegging its new value at $450 million as it reported second-quarter earnings. The Marlboro maker had recently valued its stake in the company at a vastly reduced $1.6 billion. Despite the losses Altria said it would maintain its investment deal with Juul, including an agreement not to market or invest in competing vaping products. "At this point in the process we`ve chosen not to make any different decisions,"Altria CEO Billy Gifford told industry analysts on a call. "We think the right decision currently is to stay under the non-compete." Altria, based in Richmond, Virginia, is Juul`s largest investor with a 35% stake. Altria exe

SOME PEOPLE WHO VAPE TO QUIT SMOKING END UP DOING BOTH 2022-07-26
Most of the 40 million Americans who smoke cigarettes say they want to quit, and may switch to vaping. But a growing number end up becoming dual nicotine users: smoking traditional cigarettes and vaping e-cigarettes, too, researchers have found. As a result, rather than discontinuing their addiction, many end up substantially increasing the amount of nicotine they consume. The good news, the researchers say, is that smoking-cessation treatments approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that focus on nicotine replacement and counseling can help such dual users quit. In fact, such treatments seem to be effective in dual users as well as those who smoke traditional cigarettes exclusively. "We recommend FDA-approved treatment such as nicotine replacement, the drug varenicline, and counseling for cigarette smokers," says senior investigator Li-Shiun Chen, an associate professor of psychiatry at Washington University in St. Louis. "But we know that a growing number of people are using both cigarettes and e-cigarettes. The good news is that tobacco treatment still can help these people stop smoking and defeat their nicotine addiction."
From 2018 to 2020, E-Cigarette Use in U.S. Adults Down Slightly 2022-07-26
However, during same period, daily e-cigarette use increased, especially among those aged 21 to 24 years MONDAY, July 25, 2022 (HealthDay News) -- From 2018 to 2020, there was a slight decrease in electronic cigarette use among U.S. adults, especially among young adults aged 18 to 20 years, while daily e-cigarette use increased during the same period, according to a study published online July 22 in JAMA Network Open. Ellen Boakye, M.D., M.P.H., from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore, and colleagues conducted a repeated cross-sectional study using data from the 2017, 2018, and 2020 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System involving 994,307 adults aged 18 years and older to examine recent patterns in current and daily e-cigarette use. The researchers found the prevalence of current e-cigarette use was 4.4, 5.5, and 5.1 percent in 2017, 2018, and 2020, respectively. The recent decrease was mainly seen for young adults aged 18 to 20 years (from 18.9 to 15.6 percent). However, there was a consistent increase seen in the prevalence of daily e-cigarette use from 1.5 to 2.1 and 2.3 percent in 2017 to 2018 and 2020, respectively. Among young adults aged 21 to 24 years, a slight, but insignificant, increase was seen in the prevalence of current e-cigarette use (from 13.5 to 14.5 percent), while the prevalence of daily e-cigarette use increased significantly from 4.4 to 6.6 percent between 2018 and 2020.
